American Torii
A catalog of Shinto gates across the Americas.
A torii is a gateway that traditionally marks the approach to a Shinto shrine. There are hundreds of thousands — if not millions — of them across Japan. But in the Americas, where Shinto shrines are scarce, most torii aren't associated with shrines at all. Instead they turn up in all sorts of places — gardens, city parks, university campuses — even private homes. This project catalogs torii wherever they stand, shrine or not.
45 torii catalogued across 20 regions in 4 countries.
