American Memorial Torii

A memorial to fallen American servicemen stands at the center of this rotary on northern Broadway, built in 1945 by Navy Seabees using remnants of Tinian's Shinto shrines. Termites have since eaten its wooden torii — only two posts remain — and the torii and stone lanterns long led visitors to mistake the memorial for a shrine. Its sign still reads "American Memorial Hinode Shrine," though the actual Hinode Shrine is a short distance south.
