Dinner Bay Torii

This torii marks the forest-trail entrance to the Japanese Garden in Dinner Bay Park, built by island volunteers in memory of the Japanese families who farmed and fished on Mayne Island from the early 1900s until 1942, when they were removed to internment camps on the mainland and none returned. The garden was conceived by the island's Parks and Recreation Commission in 1987 and opened in 2002; resident Hans van Tongeren made and erected the gate in May of that year, in time for the visit of Lieutenant-Governor Iona Campagnolo, who dedicated the garden. Its curving top beam is roofed with shingles and carries a tablet reading 平安 — "peace."

The garden also features a uniqe torii-esque signboard.
