This torii stands on the path to the Amaterasu-ōmikami shrine at the Drala Mountain Center, a 600-acre Tibetan Buddhist retreat founded by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in 1971. The shrine was built in 1992 at the request and under the guidance of Kanjuro Shibata XX, Trungpa's longtime friend and collaborator, and consecrated that summer by priests from the Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America. It sits in the pine forest on the mountainside above the center's landmark Great Stupa of Dharmakaya.
