A torii sits in the grassy median of North Nevada Avenue east of Acacia Park, commemorating the sister-city relationship Colorado Springs formed with Fujiyoshida, Japan in 1962. Long believed to be a gift from Fujiyoshida, the monument was actually planned and funded locally by the Downtown Rotary Club at a cost of $1,500 (including the surrounding Japanese garden) and dedicated on June 10, 1966; Fujiyoshida sent Fuji cherry trees to mark the occasion.
