Hilo Daijingu Torii

This torii stands at Hilo Daijingu, which claims to be the oldest Shinto shrine outside of Japan. The shrine was founded on 3 November 1898 by Rev. Kakuta Kōshi to enshrine Amaterasu Ōmikami and other kami for Hawaii's Japanese immigrants. The shrine's priest was arrested after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and its property forfeited to the U.S. Army, leaving it inactive until 1955. Its subsequent home near the Wailoa River was destroyed by the tsunami of the 1960 Chilean earthquake, after which the shrine was rebuilt at the present site.
