This torii stands at Hawaii Izumo Taisha, a branch of the Izumo Ōyashiro grand shrine of Shimane Prefecture that held its first service for Hawaii's Japanese pioneers in 1906. The shrine building, erected in 1922 by a master builder from Japan, was confiscated by the City and County of Honolulu during World War II while its bishop's family was held in relocation camps; the Hawaii Supreme Court ordered its return, and in 1962 the entire structure was relocated to the present site.
