This torii stands in the Gardens at Lake Merritt, where the original gate was given to the city in 1969 by the junior chamber of commerce of Oakland's sister city, Fukuoka, Japan. When that gate decayed, the Oakland-Fukuoka Sister City Association raised funds for a replacement, unveiled in 2002 during the association's 40th-anniversary celebration.
