This torii stands at the Maalaea Ebisu Kotohira shrine, erected in 1914 by Maalaea's villagers and Japanese fishermen; the original shrine was the work of a boatwright and carpenter named Matsunaga. The shrine is maintained by the Maalaea Ebisu Kotohira Jinsha society, which still gathers annually for a ceremony at the shrine and a blessing of the harbor's boats.
