This torii near the east gate of Soo Locks Park was a gift to the city from Chase S. Osborn — onetime Sault Ste. Marie postmaster later Governor of Michigan — who arranged for it to be sent from Japan. A sign nearby ties it to the sister-city relationship between Sault Ste. Marie and Ryuoh, in Japan's Shiga Prefecture, affiliated in 1974.
