This torii stands at the entrance to the Sumiyoshi shrine, on a jungle-covered hill on southern Tinian. The shrine is a relic of the 1920s and '30s, when Tinian was a Japanese sugar island whose plantations — worked by Japanese, Okinawan, and Korean settlers — came to produce twice as much sugar as Saipan's. It remains in decent condition, with a small shrine still standing at the top.
